JAM Energy Contractor Market Pulse 2026

What are contractors across the UK and Europe looking for from their next move?

JAM surveyed 40 contractors across the UK and European markets to understand their current assignments, future availability, rates, mobility and what they want from their next opportunity.

The findings provide hiring and project teams with a snapshot of the factors influencing contractor decisions in 2026.

● 78% are currently looking for a new role
● 65% have a contract ending within the next six months
● 78% would prefer to move onto a new project when their current contract ends
● 63% haven't received a rate increase in the last year
● 50% would consider moving into a permanent role

Contractors are looking ahead

One of the clearest findings from the research is that contractors aren't necessarily waiting until an assignment ends before considering their next move.

Among contractors currently on assignment, 83% of European respondents and 64% of UK respondents are already looking for another role.

For employers planning upcoming projects, this highlights the importance of engaging the contractor market early. Starting conversations ahead of mobilisation could provide access to experienced talent while they're still completing their current assignment.

Rate matters, but so does the wider opportunity

Rate remains an important consideration, but the research shows it isn't the only factor influencing contractor decisions.

Project interest, working arrangements, location and contract length all feature in how contractors assess opportunities. Travel and accommodation also matter, with 72% of European respondents and 73% of UK respondents incorporating accommodation and expenses into their rate.

Understanding the complete contractor proposition can therefore be just as important as understanding the headline rate.
