Overview
We are currently seeking experienced Crane Operators to support major engineering and manufacturing projects within a highly regulated heavy industrial environment. This role involves the safe movement of engineering loads, supporting vessel operations, and ensuring the smooth day-to-day running of the shipyard while maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality, and compliance.
The successful candidate will be responsible for operating cranes and associated lifting equipment, supporting a range of operational activities across the yard, and working collaboratively with multiple departments to ensure project requirements are delivered efficiently and safely.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate cranes to safely lift, transport and position engineering loads.
- Carry out lifting operations in accordance with approved lift plans and procedures.
- Conduct pre-use inspections and routine equipment checks.
- Ensure all lifting activities comply with Health, Safety and Environmental regulations.
- Interpret work instructions and operational requirements to meet customer and project specifications.
- Select and prepare appropriate lifting equipment, consumables, materials and components.
- Support vessel operations, maintenance activities and manufacturing teams as required.
- Work safely within confined spaces and at height where authorised and trained.
- Assist with temporary protection solutions and vessel preservation activities.
- Complete all relevant documentation and permits associated with lifting operations.
- Verify completed activities meet required quality standards and specifications.
Duties May Include
- Operating overhead cranes and mobile cranes.
- Slinging and signalling activities.
- Crane Supervisor responsibilities.
- Appointed Person duties for lifting operations (where qualified).
- Operating overhead magnet cranes and magnet lifting beams.
- Fleeting operations.
- Supporting boat and vessel movements.
- Operating forklifts and material handling equipment.
- Working alongside maintenance, welding and plant teams.
- Assisting with confined space operations and permit control.
- Installation of temporary ventilation systems.
- General yard support and logistics activities.
Essential Requirements
- Previous experience operating cranes within a shipbuilding, manufacturing, construction, engineering or heavy industrial environment.
- Valid crane operator certification and relevant lifting qualifications.
- Strong understanding of lifting operations and safe systems of work.
- Ability to interpret lifting plans, procedures and technical instructions.
- Commitment to maintaining high safety and quality standards.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Flexible approach to working across multiple operational areas.
Desirable Qualifications & Experience
- Crane Supervisor certification.
- Appointed Person qualification.
- Slinger/Signaller certification.
- Mobile Crane Operator licence.
- Overhead Crane experience.
- Forklift Truck licences.
- MEWP, Cherry Picker or Scissor Lift certification.
- Confined Space training.
- Working at Height certification.
- Safety Harness training.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
