Head of Sales & Business Development- Power Systems & Grid Equipment
Retained search: JAM Talent - Energy & Power
JAM Talent has been retained to lead the search for a Head of Commercial for a fast-growing UK power systems business. All applications are handled directly by JAM Talent, in strict confidence.
About our client
Our client is unusual in the UK grid market. It is a power systems consultancy and an equipment designer-manufacturer under one roof. It solves power quality and grid compliance problems for wind, solar, BESS, data centre, industrial and critical infrastructure customers, then designs, builds and commissions the equipment that fixes them.
The business is owner-led, growing strongly and roughly doubling its headcount across three UK sites. Its technical offer is proven. The next step is a commercial function to match.
The role
Reporting to the CEO, this is a hands-on leadership role. You will build and lead the sales, business development and account management functions, while personally owning strategic accounts, major opportunities and an individual target. It suits a commercial leader who wants real influence on strategy and the chance to build something.
Key responsibilities
- Develop and deliver the commercial strategy, identifying priority markets, strategic accounts and growth opportunities
- Drive new business across power systems, renewables, industrial, data centre and critical infrastructure markets
- Personally develop and secure significant opportunities against revenue and order-intake targets
- Lead complex proposals, tenders and negotiations through to contract award
- Build structured sales, business development and account management functions with clear roles, processes and objectives
- Develop strategic account plans that grow retention, repeat business and cross-selling across services and engineered products
- Lead, coach and grow the commercial team, setting individual and team targets
- Embed CRM and ERP discipline for pipeline tracking, forecasting and reporting to the CEO
- Work with engineering, manufacturing and delivery teams to shape technically sound, commercially competitive solutions and clean handovers into projects
- Monitor margins, market opportunities and risks
What you'll bring
Essential:
- Significant senior sales, business development or commercial leadership experience in electrical engineering, power systems, industrial infrastructure or a related technical sector
- A personal track record of winning six-figure to multi-million-pound opportunities
- Experience building, leading and developing successful sales and account management teams
- Strong commercial skills across complex tenders, pricing, proposals, negotiation and contract management
- Experience driving performance through CRM, ERP and reporting
- The confidence to engage senior technical and commercial decision-makers, with a hands-on, results-driven approach
Desirable:
- Power quality, HV electrical systems, renewable energy or critical infrastructure experience
- Established industry relationships across several sectors
- Experience building or scaling a commercial function in a growing engineering business
Why apply
- Build the commercial function of a growing engineering business, reporting directly to the CEO
- A technically differentiated offer to sell, with studies, engineered equipment and site services under one roof
- Strong market drivers, including renewables, BESS, data centres, critical infrastructure and grid connections reform
- A mix of leadership and hands-on selling, with UK and international scope
- An owner-led business investing in growth
